Hot tub filtration systems remove debris, contaminants, and impurities from the water. Water circulates from the spa’s main body and passes through filter membranes that trap particles such as dirt and organic matter. This process is facilitated by a pump that ensures continuous water circulation that cleans all of the spa’s water several times in a day, resulting in clear and safe water for users.

Sanitizing systems kill bacteria and other pathogens in the water. The two most common sanitizers are chlorine and bromine. Chlorine is fast-acting, while bromine is considered more stable in high temperatures. Both ensure water safety by disinfecting the hot tub. Spa water care systems often known simply as “salt systems” actually generate either chlorine or bromine from that salt in order to sanitize the water.

Water care approaches known as “saltwater” or “salt” systems use an electrical process to generate either chlorine or bromine, often in generous amounts, from a salt added to spa water. The production of either chemical, whether chlorine or bromine, is great for sanitization of spa water, however, these systems can come with some drawbacks. Although often billed as automated systems, salt systems are not maintenance-free. These systems often require regular cartridge replacements, probe or cell cleaning, along with frequent checks for effectiveness, water balance, and to keep over-production or under-production of chlorine or bromine in check. A high volume of salt in spa water can cause hard water stains and can corrode or otherwise damage hot tub components over time. Oxidation systems introduce active oxidizing molecules to spa water to eliminate both organic and inorganic contaminants, clarifying the water in the process. These systems complement primary sanitizers, often reducing the amount needed, providing a gentler and eco-friendlier approach to maintaining water clarity. Common oxidation methods include Ozone systems, UV systems, and AOP systems.

AOP (Advanced Oxidation Process) systems use atomic oxygen (O₁) to create hydroxyl radicals, which break down contaminants through powerful oxidation. UV systems use UV-C lamps to emit ultraviolet rays into passing water. These rays disrupt the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them harmless. This technology enhances water quality and supports primary sanitizers. UV bulbs must be maintained and changed regularly to ensure effectiveness. UV can operate in stand alone systems, or, UV light is often a component of the more powerful “AOP” approach to water care.

Ozone systems introduce ozone (O₃) gas to spa water, which helps eliminate contaminants through oxidation.
